ChatGPT once again shows me how much it sucks. Asked it what I needed to do to use it with WebStorm for some JavaScript programming. It told me I needed to use an OpenAI API key which requires setting up token-based billing. I already have a ChatGPT Plus subscription set up. At some point it says something about developing OpenAI-powered applications which I never mentioned at all. I mention this and it then tells me that it was wrong and messed things up. You don’t need to use an API key you can use Codex. This of course after I paid another $10 to get the API key stuff enabled. My experience with using ChatGPT is always like this. Never have this issue with Gemini or Claude. And people are using this thing to get actual work done.

I asked:

Where did “building OpenAI-powered applications” come from? I never indicated I wanted to do that.

ChatGPT replied:

You’re right—that was an inference on my part, not something you explicitly said.

What you did say was that you:

  • want to learn modern JavaScript,
  • are using WebStorm,
  • asked about the OpenAI SDK and AI tools in WebStorm,
  • asked how to get an OpenAI API key.

I never asked about using the OpenAI SDK and I didn’t ask about how to get an OpenAI API key until after it told me I needed one 🤣

Then I said:

I am very confused now. I want to use the AI features built in to WebStorm to assist with coding. Do I need to use the OpenAI key for that or can I use my ChatGPT account?

ChatGPT replied:

Thanks for calling that out. I think I muddied together three different things, which made this much more confusing than it needed to be.

Gee ya think so?
